Beyond the species list
A sense of place.
Romblon Island is one of the three main islands of Romblon province, alongside Tablas and Sibuyan. The municipality of Romblon also includes nearby Alad, Cobrador and Logbon.
Landscape & habitats
The aerial view places the island’s relief and irregular shore in their surrounding marine setting. Beaches and bays form part of its coastal landscape, while the local marble industry reflects the importance of its underlying rock.
This page concerns Romblon Island. The province of the same name is broader and includes separate Tablas and Sibuyan pages.

Zoogeography
A small island complex with a distinct history
Romblon Island and Tablas are separated by a relatively shallow channel. Published reconstructions suggest that they were connected at their northern ends during Pleistocene low sea levels, unlike deeply separated Sibuyan.
The Romblon group remained apart from the major Luzon, Mindoro and West Visayan landmasses. Its fauna combines wider regional relationships with restricted-range animals, so the shared provincial name should not conceal the different histories of its islands.
How to read the historical island groups
During Pleistocene glacial periods, lower sea levels exposed shallow seabeds and joined some present-day islands. Biogeographers call these reconstructed landmasses Pleistocene Aggregate Island Complexes (PAICs). Deep channels continued to separate others. This model helps explain regional similarities, but dispersal, older geology and habitat differences also shaped each fauna.
“Endemic” means restricted to a stated area; a Philippine endemic need not be confined to one island. The account above summarises published regional and local research. It does not add occurrences to the snake index below.
